Gotambó Tango Show
Gotambó is a dynamic show combining traditional Tango music and dance with African percussion and rhythms. In a thoughtfully-developed and captivating program with exciting and inspired choreographies, Gotambó will unveil the hidden rhythms of Argentine Tango before the eyes and ears of the audience.
It is a well-known fact among Tango aficionados, often cited but rarely supported, that the music and dance of Tango, like the place of its origin, Buenos Aires and Montevideo, represent a kind of melting pot of various streams of European and African culture, music and dance. However, in modern Tango it is primarily the European elements (harmony, song structures, dance forms and movements) which have prevailed and are more readily visible and traceable. The African roots remain for the most part covered, hidden or forgotten in history, vaguely intuited and thinly if at all heard. Few people can point out where or how to hear the influences.
Gotambo is an exciting and original exploration, both musical and choreographic, of the African roots of Tango. It combines an historically informed re-creation of this stream of influence with the artistic freedom of a 21st century perspective. Although its main aim is not to document with academic accuracy the early developments, it does attempt to show how Tango was or might have been formed through contact with African culture.
At the same time as it exposes and reveals these elements, it also emphasizes them in an intentionally non-historical way, creating non-typical combinations that cast a new light onto some typical idioms of traditional Tango music and dance. It is in this recombination and free emphasis that the energy of this show derives its strength and interest, its excitement. The merely educational and historical bows to the artistic and exploratory, creating something that could have been and what might yet come...
